In 1975, Greg Mantell-Hecathorn, Founder of Mantell-Hecathorn Builders, set out to be the best, driven by a commitment to superior craftsmanship and unwavering integrity.
Over nearly five decades, the company’s journey has included 13 years in Fairbanks, Alaska, building homes in extreme conditions; 18 years in Orinda, California, specializing in high-end renovations and custom homes; and 19 years in Durango, Colorado, as a leading design-build firm focused on personal attention and certified quality.
Today, under the leadership of Hunter Mantell-Hecathorn, President, the tradition of excellence continues. With over 20 years of experience, Hunter’s hands-on approach ensures every project meets the highest standards of performance and quality, giving homeowners complete confidence.
Every project is a collaborative effort, blending the client’s vision with the expertise, integrity, and experience of the M-H team, along with an architect who aligns with the client’s style. We are involved from site selection and preconstruction to value engineering, design, and the finishing touches on hardscaping and landscaping.
Hunter is President of Mantell-Hecathorn Builders and is responsible for all daily operations. Our standards of quality and commitment to certified high performance homes require Hunter’s exceptional knowledge and supervision of project to meet these goals. Hunter oversees every aspect of each project, including design, budget, value engineering, building science, scheduling and quality control. All of our clients count on Hunter’s communication skills, personal oversight and integrity. He personally dedicates time to each client as well as onsite supervision. His knowledge of building science and high performance technique and standards is without match in Southwest Colorado.
Hunter has worked in the business since he was a teenager, helping him to develop a strong work ethic and learn the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life. Hunter came to Durango, Colorado in 1999 to study Geology at Fort Lewis College, and fell in love with the area. His love of mountain biking, skiing, hiking and backpacking kept him in Durango beyond his years at Fort Lewis. He soon realized that nothing could replace the satisfaction and creative stimulation he gained from building.
Hunter has immersed himself in every aspect of the business and has dedicated himself to building science and focused his education to energy efficient building practices. Hunter takes continuing education classes, attends seminars, webinars and conferences to ensure that his knowledge is current with the most innovative technology, materials, and building practices.

When not working, he most values spending time with his wife of 16 years, Miranda and their daughters, Maya (13) and Olivia (9). Hunter also enjoys pursuing his passion of photography, along with family camping in the desert and mountains. Occasional trips to his family cabin in the Brooks Range of Alaska along with joining in the get togethers of Miranda's multigenerational Durango family.
Miranda first became involved in the business in 2011. She as President manages all day to day aspects of business administration. Her previous 10 years of working as a legal assistant in an asset in overseeing the execution of all client and subcontractor contracts, insurances and project permitting. In addition to the contractual side of business administration, she is also involved with managing the accounting for the business and projects, and oversees all marketing operations.
Miranda was born and raised in the Durango community as a 4th generation native. She graduated from Fort Lewis College with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Communications and continues to support our local college through the FLC Alumni Association. Prior to joining the family business, Miranda spent 10 years working as a legal assistant and office manager for a local civil attorney and worked for the 9-R School District as a secondary and Business educator at the Robert E. Denier, Youth Detention Center. She is a member of the Professional Women’s Network and HBASC.
Outside the office, Miranda’s attention is on her family. Miranda and Hunter enjoy spending time in the mountains and nearby canyon country with their daughters, Maya (13) and Olivia (9), and 5 year old Chocolate Lab Selby. Miranda loves practicing yoga, reading, writing, crafting and fly fishing our local rivers.
Project Superintendent
Aaron Hobart has been dedicated to carpentry and construction for nearly 20 years. His experience ranges from custom interior finish work and cabinetry to framing and structure. Aaron has worked with a diverse range of different contractors here in Durango and back in CT, where he was born and raised. Aarons drive to work on the most elite, custom homes has led him to Mantell-Hecathorn as a project manager.
When Aaron’s not working, you can find him in the mountains with his family and dog. He enjoys floating down the Animas and rock crawling in Moab.
Creative Content and Marketing Director
Mikayla is the Creative Content and Marketing Director for Mantell-Hecathorn Builders. She is in charge of website design maintenance and content creation for social and media print.
Mikayla is a 4th generation Durango native and came back to Durango in 2019 after graduating from Northern Arizona University, where she received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminology and Bachelors Administration Degree with an emphasis on Marketing. She is an Alumni of Alpha Phi Sorority and a member of the Professional Woman’s Network.
While not at work, Mikayla enjoys spending time with her husband, nieces and nephews, being outside boating, camping, or hiking. She also loves to revisit college friends in Arizona.
Office Manager
As Office Administrator, Kerry handles various clerical and office tasks including accounts payable, payroll, bookkeeping, and administrative project management. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from Fort Lewis College in 2015 with a degree in Business Administration.
Kerry was born and raised in Durango and loves the small-town community and the beautiful surrounding landscapes. In her free time, she enjoys camping in the summers and has been an avid skier since childhood. She also enjoys relaxing with a good book and spending time with her family.
Greg has built distinguished custom homes for 47 years, founding Mantell-Hecathorn Builders, Inc., and earning a reputation for excellence and client satisfaction in southwest Colorado. Now retired, he serves as a consultant for the company. A pioneer in super-insulated, energy-efficient homes in Alaska during the 1980s, Greg was also among the first in Colorado to earn the Master Certified Green Professional credential from the National Association of Home Builders. His commitment to building science continues to guide him in creating durable, energy-efficient, and healthier homes.

Greg's greatest joy comes from his family. He and Tara, married for 48 years, have raised three successful sons and enjoy their four grandchildren. In 1975, they homesteaded and built a log cabin in the remote Brooks Range wilderness of Alaska, where they spent 13 winters, and which remains their family’s original home. Greg enjoys hiking, camping, cycling, international travel, and revisiting their Alaskan roots.

Tara co-founded Mantell-Hecathorn Builders, Inc. over 47 years ago and was integral to its daily operations. Now retired, she serves as a consultant to the company. After earning a degree in wildlife ecology from the University of California at Davis, Tara and Greg moved to Alaska, where she participated in wolf research and worked as a union laborer in commercial construction for ten years. She also gained hands-on experience building their own log cabins, deepening her understanding of the physical demands of construction.Tara’s focus has always been family. She has volunteered extensively in community programs, including schools, kids’ sports, and Boy Scouts, believing in the importance of contributing positively to the community. Though she continues to prioritize family, Tara also loves exploring the outdoors with Greg, whether hiking, camping, cycling, or cross-country skiing.
